h) In the middle of 4th century, Wadi Natrun grew in importance and monasticism spread through Christian Egypt. The number of monks grew such that their settlements attracted barbarians. Monasteries were built for protection around the first defensive towers. The entrance to the fortress was from the roof of the old church over a wooden bridge. There are four monasteries: Saint Macarius, Anba-Bishoy, Al-Surian, Al-Baramose.
